Yee Ha!!! Control Arm Bushings going in!
Forgive my excitement. Yippee! I finally got this figureed out sort
of.
Looking at Bentley, it appears that one of the special tools squishes
(tm) the bushing down so it will slide into the arm without tearing.
lacking one of these, I cut a 2-1/2" piece of 1.5" (mixed fracs and
dec?) PVC pipe, then cut it lengthwise once. It's easy to press the
bushing into this with a vise because it opens up as the bushing goes
in. When both sides of the bushing are in, I use a hose clamp with help
from the vise to squish (tm) it closed tight, making sure not to pinch
the edges of the bushing.
Then I made another 1" tool like the first, to go around the inside of
the control arm's hole flange. This does two things - 1. allows me to
put the stuff further into the arbor press (did I mention I had one?)
and get a better grip, and 2. allows the bushing to come all the way
through without resetting everything.
Photos to follow at my web site...
Did I say "Yippee" yet?
What a productive Sunday - saw a hummingbird, did my laundry, and
figured out how to press in control arm bushings!
Gotta go
