'93 90 instrument cluster removal

The backlight in my clock went out the other day, so I'm going to be
taking out that console so I can replace it (prob. with an LED so I
don't have to do this very often).
I've got good instructions on how to remove the panel, except for one
thing--the airbag. The manual says in big, bold, capital letters that
it's very important that I disable the airbag, as per the instructions
in another manual that I don't have. First I thought of just not
disabling it and taking my chances, but for some reason that worries me
a little bit. Then as I was crawling around the other day installing
Dynamat I noticed a little access panel (which now has no cover, thanks
Jim Ellis) with a big red connector on it labeled "Airbag." Hmmm, sez
I, maybe this is what I want?
What's the risk in disconnecting this? I assume the airbag won't deploy
but when I plug it back in, will it work? Will I be plagued with the
big red Airbag light until my 60,000mi service?

TIA
