Re: leaking fuel distributor
Problem solved.
Problem was:
Fuel leaking from bottom of airbox on 4kq.
Air filter soaked in fuel.
Lesson 1 - the fuel dist is just the top part on the airbox that has
5 or 6 fuel lines coming out of it, and can be replaced by
removing those lines (10mm) and three flat screws (cordless
Dewalt hammer drill, 14.4v, on sale at www.harborfreight.com
for $159, reconditioned, was the perfect tool after snapping
a craftsman screwdriver). However, I didn't know
this, and swapped the whole assembly north of the airbox which
includes the metering plate.
Obvisouly this takes much longer. After getting it all together,
and installing air filter #3 in 2 days, started it, it ran,
I checked for fuel coming out of the box and DAMN, there it was
again!
Took a break and had a beer, called my mechanic buddy who suggested
lifting the airbox cover up, jumping the fuel pump (relay 10, jump
terminal 87 to 30, the largest two which are opposite each other)
and I saw the fuel. Then I looked at the end of the assembly,
where there is a fuel pressure regulator, with a vent line that
goes to the airbox. Voila. The regulator was leaking fuel back
into the box (pissing is more like it) at idle.
The purpose of this vent is when the car idles, the vent allows fuel
to recirc back to the tank, so says my friend.
So, later today I'll be buying air filter #4, and putting it back
together for the last time.
I did manage to mess up all the vacuum lines, so if anyone with
a 4kq will be around after 1PM EST and doesn't mind a little
cordless phone poking around, send me private email with your
phone number.
Thanks,
