Power steering - '89 Audi 100

I quite recently bought this auto. with a very leaky PS pump, which I replaced
with one from a salvage yard.

But Increasingly now, power assistance fades to next to nought at slow speeds
and heavy turns, eg., when parking, but is OK when engine speed increases. All
else seems normal - no leaks, belt recently replaced etc.

Any suggestions - just a tired replacement pump ? bad bomb ? - though again, no
other brake etc. symptoms. All I can think of otherwise is that  I read
somewhere on the list that the banjo connectors are not interchangeable between
different years of pumps, and I suppose I may have mixed these up when I changed
the pumps.
