 Thanks for the replies everyone.. I'll be sure to check out the rear diff
 mounts as suggested..
 The thump in the back description I gave though may be a little vague..
the
 feeling I get is like a very rough gearshift..it happens mostly on the
 upshift and never when I am accelerating with a firm foot on the gas
pedal.
 If I take off rather gently from a stoplight, it is almost guaranteed to
 jerk on the shift points. I'd hate it to be the tranny.  
 The one big dislike I have with this car is the lack of a transmission
 dipstick... WHY ON EARTH one would not be supplied is beyond me.. I would
 feel much more comfortable being able to at least check the fluid level.
 The times I have taken it in to Audi just to have the fluid checked cost
me
 $60 a pop.
