Rear license plate mounting
My 1993 90S had the most bogus license plate mounting system
I've ever seen. It had these metal inserts in plastic and the threaded
portion of the insert is only about 3/16 of an inch deep. Major pain
if you want to put a clear cover over your plate, you have to try to
find longer bolts, but not too long.
So I changed it.
I used a piece of 1/4" thick aluminum plate, and cut it out to the exact
shape of the license. Next step was to mark, drill, and tap holes for
mounting the license and cover to the plate. Then I removed the license,
centered the new aluminum plate and marked holes to drill though the
aluminum plate and the black plastic. Then you take out the two mounting
screws holding the plastic in place and pry it out, it's got some glue
holding it in place, but it will give, especially if the car has been in
the
sun. I used 1/4-20 stainless steel round head bolts with washers to hold
the aluminum plate to the plastic. Oh did I mention you have to drill
(hole
saw) 5/8" holes in the aluminum plate to access the mounting screws for
the plastic piece. After the plastic with the aluminum plate was
remounted
to the car, I then used stainless steel allen head bolts to mount the
license
plate and the clear cover (less chance of some bone head making off with
my license).
If anyone is interested, I made a template of the aluminum plate before
I mounted it, with all the necessary holes marked. If e-mail me a fax
number (US only please) I can fax it over to you. It's on a 11x17 piece
of
paper so it might come out in two pieces on you end, but you will get
the
idea.
I should mention, this is for USA license plates, I'm not sure if this
would
work in other countries.
