4ksq pilot bearing removal
Is it just me or is it a real problem to remove the pilot
bearing from a 4000 Quattro? The bearing shell seems to have
fused itself to the recess in the crankshaft. Could this
thing have been installed with Loctite by the same sadistic
person who tightened all those hard to reach bolts on the
engine with an impact wrench cranked up to 11 on a scale
of 1 to 10? I have tried a puller, hammer and chisel, and
finally carefully ground through part of the bearing shell with
a small grindstone. You can actually see where the shell
ends and the crank begins because the metal changes color
but that thing just won't let go. I have been working on
German cars for 25 years and consider myself a pretty good
amateur mechanic but I have never encountered anything
like this. Is it time to buy a Dremel or is there some
trick to breaking it loose?
Also, the dealer lists two different part numbers for the pilot
bearing. Does anybody know the difference and the approximate
date of the change? My car is titled as an '85 and definitely
is not an '84.
