Air Conditioner Compressor diagnosis

Is this a fair method to diagnosis an air conditioner compressor on a 1988
90Q or am I missing something?

Used one of those remote starter (push to start) cables so I could be in
front of Q to listen for compressor clutch. This fed 12 volts from the
battery to the positive terminal of the compressor while the Q is running.

Compressor clutch should kick in when pressing remote starter cable .....if
not, clutch is dead......replace compressor or clutch or both.  Correct
method?
