SPRONGL SETS QUICKEST TIME IN SIXTY-NINE CAR FIELD AT AUDI-MT. WASHINGTON
HILLCLIMB PRACTICE ON FRIDAY
Pinkham Notch, NH - Officials at the Mt. Washington Auto Road located in
Pinkham Notch reported Friday that after the first day of practice for the
Audi-Mt. Washington Hillclimb, Frank Sprongl of Mississauga, Ontario posted
the quickest time of the day in the sixty-nine car field by recording a time
of 3 minutes, 56.49 seconds to the half-way point of the mountain. Sprongl,
a two-time overall winner at this event, covered the 4-mile lower half of
the Auto Road at an average speed of 60.890 miles per hour in his 350
horsepower, all-wheel-drive, Yokahama-Castrol sponsored Audi Quattro.
Finishing just behind Sprongl, with a time of 4 minutes, 03.36 seconds,
was last years overall winner Selcuk Karamanoglu from Georgetown, Maine
driving an all-wheel drive, 300 horsepower Eagle Talon. Third overall was
Centerbrook, CT native Dan Rutan with a time of 4 minutes, 12.23 seconds
driving an average speed of 57.090 miles per hour.
In other racing action from the Mt. Washington Auto Road, two drivers went
off course during practice, however there were no injuries reported. Scott
Wallace of Boxboro, MA., driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI in Class 3 had a
minor off course excursion at the two-mile point but will be able to
continue tomorrow.
David Patten from Dunbarton, NH was not as fortunate however. Driving a
1971 Datsun 510 he built himself, Patten slid off course at the 3-mile point
of the Auto Road and hit a tree with the right front of the car. Patten was
not hurt in the incident, however extensive damage to the race-car forced
Patten to withdraw from the event.
Practice & qualifying will resume Saturday at 7am for the Audi-Mt.
Washington Hillclimb with two full-course runs on the 7.4 mile course,
weather permitting. There will be no charge to spectate from the base of
the Auto Road on Saturday morning, June 27th. Following practice and
qualifying on Saturday, there will be a Family Festival and Car Show at the
base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road from noon to 4pm with music, vendors,
food and an array of custom and classic cars on display.
Gates will open Sunday, June 28th at 7am with tickets available to view
the race from just above tree-line at the half-way spectator area or from
the summit. The Auto Road will close to all uphill traffic at 9am with
driver introductions starting at 9:40am and racing action beginning at 10am.
