93 90S Throttle Body



Was tinkering under the hood of my 90S V6 this weekend.
Looking around with my handy-dandy mirror at the plasic
tube that runs back to my throttle body, it seemed that it
wasn't connected tight enough. So Saturday morning, I
started taking things apart, here's what I found.

You remove the two bolts on top of the intake runners, these
are the only bolts holding it. Then pry off the connectors at
each valve cover for the hoses that run to the thottle intake.
Lastly, there is a vacuum hose that connects just to the right
(driver's side) of the throttle body. In my case I didn't know
about the vacuum hose until I got the plastic plenum out, mine
broke right off. Turns out it wasn't doing much good, seeing that
it was completely choked with oil deposits. This hose is
supposed to provide vacuum to hold closed a little rubbery
valve in the plenum until such time as the blow-by gasses over
power the vacuum, thereby preventing oil being sucked into
your throttle all the time (so that's why there's a film of oil in
my throttle body!). Well, my fiance was just heading out for a
quick trip to the store, and we had plans to take the Audi out
that afternoon, so I desperately needed a replacement vacuum
hose. Well, while she was gone, I was looking around and noticed
that there are two pegs with rubber bushings on the throttle body
that hold the plastic plenum in place , and of course one of those
bushings was gone. Also, the aforementioned little rubber valve
in the plenum wasn't in that great of shape. Well, my S.O.
managed to find some vacuum hose that works for now, but I
will be going back in to replace parts.

Will be replacing: that section of vacuum hose with dealer piece,
the little rubber valve thingy, the missing rubber bushing. I also
plan to use some appropriate cleaner (not carb cleaner) to flush
out the blow-by gas lines and ports, as they are probably some
what clogged (had to use coat hanger wire to clean out vacuum port
on plastic plenum).

I would also like to mention that the throttle body would definitely
benefit from a little porting, looked to me like an additional 1/4" in
overall diameter wouldn't be out of line. The Throttle Position Sensor
is on the bottom of the throttle body, VERY IMPORTANT, do not
remove this sensor, just unhook the leads (make sure the shop doing
the modification doesn't remove it either). Otherwise, taking out
the throttle body doesn't look like it will be too difficult. Now I
just need to find a shop to do the machining, BEFORE I start tearing
things apart.
