Thanks to all who responded to my original query.
It turned out to be a faulty throttle position sensor. Disconnecting it
seemed to fix the problem, although idle was wierd: revs would take a
long time to drop with zero throttle and sometimes, at idle, revs woiuld
inadvertantly rise. I was told that by disconnecting the TPS, the
computer went into limp mode, defaulting off of some parameters earlier
set.
