The price of fixing a quattro
For those interested in knowing the cost of getting a high milege ur-quattro
ready for a
summer road trip with the family I have listed it all here. I did not include
stuff like engine
cleaners or lock tight or things like that. I didn't include tune up or fuel
filters either. Thanks
to Carlsens and Carr Parts I was able to reduce my cost significantly. The
Hose Shop and Polar radiator get the nod too. A big thanks goes to my buddy
Ron Austin, a western regional Audi master mechanic champ who hates to work on
cars, especially after hours, Steve Buchholz for putting up with all my emails
and of course all you guys.
As much as I wanted to replace the struts, strut bearings and tires I just
couldn't afford to. the
best I could do on struts was $279 for factory replacements from RD. I'm not
sure I want to
go that route so better to wait and possibly go with Koni's. The tires on my
car are not that
good as far as brands go but with substancial tread still on them there is not
much practical need to replace them.
Another note to make is none of this really covers restoration either. These
repairs were simply
needed to get the car into some sort of reliable running condition. The car
still needs paint work and a little interior work. It also needs a more
suitable exhaust. I'm certain my wife would rather I have spent
a couple hundered dollars to get the Jetta GLI ready for a long road trip as
opposed to the fortune I've spent on the quattro but we'll be off on dirt
roads a lot so I'll be happy.
I will note that I did all the labor except the CV's because I don't have a
means of cleaning
them here at home. I estimate I will have the car on the ground and ready for
road testing the end of the July 4th weekend. The current hold up is a stud
for the oil line to the turbo. Yeah, one stud I can't get until next week.
The grand total is in excess of $2700. Now I'm just putting it back together.
The wife and kids will be gone Friday so I'll have all day to get her
together.
