Hey, that's not motor oil, that's mineral oil!
Yep, I figured out that the leak was above the oil pan and below the
valve cover gasket. This leaves only the head gasket. Wait a minute.
What's that stuff on the bottom of the hydraulic pump? I got a good
"sample" of the fluid from a pocket above the water thermostat housing.
I also took a sample from the hydraulic reservoir and we have a match. I
guess it picked up a lot of dirt on it's way down the side of the motor
to the ground that made it look brown. Also might explain why the
spillage on the exhaust didn't make a burning oil smell. Guess I need
one of those o-ring kits. How timely can these posts be? "re:
