Richard- Thanks for the info. I just got up after a good nights sleep, and I
think I figured out whats wrong ( hopefully) with my cars electric cooling
fan. At this point its just wishful thinking however since I haven't yet
checked. In my case, only the thid stage operation is working. This is the
mode which bypasses the resistor board entirely. The slow  mode goes thru both
resistors, and the second stage goes thru only one of the resistors. Since
neither mode works, I am hoping its the second stage mode resistor thats bad.
I do not want to spend $1000 for a box, and junk yard V8s are rare.  In your
case, it might be the other resistor thats bad, and not the elec mod. BTW the
dealer here diagnosed my cruise control problem as a bad module, and with help
from Qlisters I fixed it by cleaning the vacuum pump. Beware of bad Audi
mechanics!!
