1990 Audi 80 (was Thinking of purchasing)
Thanks to all the fellow listers for their advice on the 1990 Audi 80
purchase. Just to fill you all in, I have decided to get the car,
despite what www.carfax.com had to say.
Let me tell you why: It seems as though in Florida, when a car is taken
in for its 6-month (?) emission inspection, the mileage is recorded, and
subsuquently reported to Carfax. According to the report, this car went
from 50,000 at an inspection (probably just a rounded figure entered by
a well-meaning inspector) to 46,674 at its next title issuance. Does
not seem unusual here, just a little bit of rounding on the inspection
station's part. Then, its next title was issued at 47,600 about a year
later. ONLY FOUR MONTHS after that, it was inspected and the inspector
took down a mileage of 87,000. In my opinion, I think he meant 47,000
but upon realizing his typo, if he did realize it at all, probably
didn't think it mattered. It seems odd for a car to travel 40,000 miles
in four months, IMHO. Anyway, when the title changed hands next, the
odeometer read 49,100. Therefore, Carfax indicated a potential
odeometer rollback. Hmmmmm...
Anyway, you can point your browsers to this report for the next 24 hours
or so by clicking here --->

Thanks again for all your advice. I am glad that the carfax report did
not indicate that the vehicle had been totalled or salvaged etc. The
owner did indicate to me that the vehicle had been repaired by
installing a new fender and a new front bumper, but assured me that the
damage was minor. I guess we'll see tomorrow.
BTW, I did a nationwide search on www.traderonline.com and found that
this particular car was the lowest mileage, lowest price example of a
1988-1992 Audi 80. He said he'd take $3500. If my fiance' doesn't like
it, I guess I could probably get at least $4000 for it, covering my
plane ticket to Miami.
Wish me luck all!
Thanks,
Chris
