S2 Oil pan, can anyone take a peek?
Does _anybody_ out there have access to an S2 they can crawl under?
I can't determine from the microfiche exactly how an A/C-equipped S2 3B
engine differs from the 3B in the US 200tq.
Here's the situation: The 3B in a '91 200 has the A/C compressor on the
driver's side of the engine, and the alternator opposite. The 3B S2 is the
other way around, same as the '90-'91 Coupe Quattro. Both the 200tq and Cq
have the same oil pan, which has an extension on the passenger side with a
cut-out to allow the vertically mounted oil filter to fit. When you mount
the CQ A/C compressor on the passenger side of the 200 3B engine, the
mounting bracket overlaps the same airspace occupied by the oil filter, and
conflicts with the turbo oil return line which goes into the side of the
block. The S2 fiche does not show any pictures, but has separate PNs
(specifically mentions "for A/C equipped car") for: the oil pan extension,
the turbo oil return line, turbo oil feed line, and the oil filter bracket.
My hypothesis is:
The oil filter bracket on the S2 3B mounts the filter _horizontally_, at
about a 45 degree angle to the block (pointing backwards). (this is
suggested on the fiche) I'll bet that the oil pan extension piece on the S2
is larger than the 200/CQ piece and lacks the weird cut-out, since there is
now no conflict with the oil filter. Finally, I'm guessing that the oil
return line from the turbo goes into the top of this extension rather than
into the block.
I'd love to clear this up without blindly ordering parts. OTOH, if there is
an elegant factory solution, I'd rather use it than invent our own. Can
anyone take a peek and confirm the situation?
