Intermittent Air Conditioner

Anyone know what problem the following is a symptom of in a 1990 Audi 200 Quattro ? When the climate control system is set to AUTO, the air conditioned air comes out the center vents. When you accelerate the air moves to the floor and defrost vents. If you let off on the accelerator the air will return to the center vents after a few seconds. 

I assume it is some type of vacuum problem, because I used to drive a '54 Chevy pickup with vacuum powered windshield wipers and when you accelerated, the wipers would stop and not re-start until you let off the accelerator.  Are the devices that control air distribution vacuum operated? If so, where might a leak be?
