Brooks,

What is the significance of calling your car an '89.5? That is, what (of
any significance) distinguishes a later-in-the-year '89 200q from its
younger '89 model-year siblings?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

->'89:
1. No airbag (insert your favourite sport steering wheel here)
2. Single knock sensor
3. Compression 7.6:1 (boost her up to the stratospheric levels)
4. Big K26 turbo (this baby _blows_ some pressure!)
Net result: a friggin freight train after you chip her up. Horrendous lag too
(one can't have the cake and eat it too, at least with a single turbo engine)

'89.5->
1. Airbag (you are married to the gigantic OEM 400mm steering wheel)
2. Two knock sensors
3. Compression 8.4:1 (careful here!)
4. Smaller K24 turbo (careful here even more, see an excellent post of Scott
Justusson "supersonic turbos")
Net result: a modest level of chipping allowed. A side benefit - less lag.
