How do I check the after run coolant pump?

Could I test the after run coolant pump, by letting the motor run until the
electric fan comes on, turn of ignition, undo the ground on electric fan?
Fan should turn of, but pump should make noise.      Or, disconnect harness
at coolant pump, idle engine until fan comes on, measure voltage at harness,
if yes, wait until fan stops and put a direct 12 V to pump and I would hear
if it works. Does this work, or is there a better way?............ I just
did the first and the pump did not work. The pump is nearly new, but
probably never operated. Thanks, Martin.
