Re: vw head

Thanks, man -- but I did a few tests at home and found out it was only the
h2o pump anyway..

I had a sneaking' suspicion that it wasn't the head. Even though it was
leaking a brown oily liquid that appeared to be watery oil, it was actually
old coolant that had an oily texture because apparently coolant is 50%
oil-based (I know this thanks to a lister ). Plus, I checked the plugs --
they were fine... Checked the oil -- it was normal -- and at the level it
was supposed to be. There was far too much liquid pouring out of this
thing that night -- and if it was the oil, there would have bee a whole
bunch of it missing!

Soo -- I took Chris's suggestion and filled the radiator with water and ran
the car for a few minutes. Sure enough, watery brown-green liquid started
pouring out of the peephole on the bottom of the h2o pump!

After doing some more checking, we figured out that it was only the
impeller that was gone, so we replaced that, the timing belt, the v-belts
and it runs like a top now..

I may do the head (and other) gaskets because (1) I should do it anyway,
and (2) I bought a 'head-set.'

Thanks for all your help!
