Subject: Re: odometer

Since there seems to be alot of discussion re: broken odometer gears...I was

once told by an ex Audi dealer mechanic to never reset the trip odometer when

the car is moving, only when stopped. He says this is what causes the gears to

crack. Since I have never heard this brought up here I believe even more (than

when I was told) that this is false. Can anyone confirm or deny that this is

the case? Does it even sound reasonable? (Having not yet torn one apart I

can't make my own judgement.) TIA

Mike it is true atleast it happened to me twice on my '86 5000S. One should
never reset the odometer when it is moving. What happened to me happened twice
because the first time it broke I didn't realize it had anything to do with
something I might of done. I thought it was just the nature of the beast. When
I reset the O while moving the O continued to work until it had to flip back
to the 000 representing a thousand mile mark. Then it would just stop this
happened to me twice. So I would have to say the mechanic was right. I wish
somebody told me not to reset the trip meter while moving I had to learn the
hard way "twice".
