Tranny Shot?

Driving the 1990 80 automatic today, had a slight problem.  Transmission
slips in drive, bur reverses just fine.  Car would barely go and had to
be towed to AAMCO.  Anyone know if they would do a good job?  It is
strange that this just happened all the sudden, rather than gradually.
Someone told me it could be that the bands are out of adjustment.  I
know absolutely nothing about how auto trannies work, so if anyone has
any advice on what I could/should do, I would greatly appreciate.

Two things, the fluid was very high on the dipstik, both with car off
and idling in park.  What does this mean?  Also, there seems to be a
slight leak around where the dipstik tube meets the pan, but it is very
slight.  No spots on the ground, just a little fluid around the area.
