Re: Microfiche scanning for $3000?!

TO Lisa and all interested in this subject:

A guy I spoke to last year at TMC Publications told me that he
can get a complete set of brand-new microfiche parts catalogs
for the entire VW-Audi line of cars for about $300.

He can also get the entire set, *already on CD-ROM*, for $1000.
I understand the CD comes with DOS-based software, and I got the
impression that the images are stored in a proprietary format
(probably a licensed version of compression code from Iterated
Fractal Systems).

So it seems uneconomical to try to copy and clean up a bunch of
old fiches and burn them onto CD-ROM for $3000.

And as another lister found out from his lawyer, there are some
serious copyright issues to deal with here as well.

I'm with y'all, as I've been dreaming of having an online integrated
database for each car, which would include the parts diagrams from the
catalogs. But for now, this will remain dream... -Doug Q
