Jeremiah,
If you are driving the car as it is while waiting to put in a new converter,
you might want to throw a ball peen hammer or something with more reach into
your car, as well as something to lie down on. The broken piece/pieces in your
converter might just decide to re-block the exit pipe at some inopportune
moment (which is just about anytime you are on the road). Then you can at
least reach under the car and whack the converter a few times, with the engine
off. May again dislodge the blockage. BTDT with an '80 VW Rabbit - a chunk of
substrate had broken loose and like a rock in a river been nicely egg-shaped,
so that it would occasionally roll up against the exit pipe.
