You're correct, nobody shed any light on what it's real function is. (I'm
still guessing it is to perhaps help absorb 5mph blows to the bumper to pass
DOT???)

Perhaps it's a pillow for the car to be more comfortable on when resting?
Since it is in the middle of the bumper, I can't see how it does anything to
deflect air (one person's thought) and it definately does have some cushion to
it in the event the bumper is smacked in the middle. Q: Does the 5k rear
bumper have one as well? (I have not removed the rear bumber on the 5ktq...but
my 4kq had no such thing in the rear bumber.)

A trivial, yet unsolved Audi mystery.
