The ur-quattro's era extends from its first appearance at the 1980
Geneva motor show to the end of production in early 1991. The late
20V cars are the same shape as the early ones, and have the same
doorhandles. Apart from that, they're pretty different. North America
only saw the first series (WR engine) but Europe and other parts of the
world saw the later versions with the MB and RR engines - _completely_
different machines, IMO. The main break in the series is between the
WR and MB in late 1987 - that's when the tandem hydraulic pump, Torsen
differential, computer wastegate control, etc., got into the car. The
20V added 10% more power, _MUCH_ better low-end torque, and a few
cosmetic enhancements. It also doesn't sound anything like as nice,
unless you remove the cats. Which is legal in the UK.
On the "free" market in the UK, WRs trade for as little as GBP2500,
MBs for GBP7500 to GBP9000, and RRs for around GBP14000 - the price
in that advert is about right, if the car's OK. In the Club Newsletter,
prices tend to be a third or more higher - perhaps because he who puts
the newsletter together owns two cars and occasionally trades in them.
The devil is in the running costs - GBP17000 in five years, in my case.
A Ferrari would have been much cheaper. But not as much fun.
The 'rare' ur-quattro is the Sport - around 200 were built and they
command up to GBP45000 depending on condition, history, etc.
