Tranny repair

Is the transmission on my 89 200T "special" like so many other parts of the
car?  Can the AAmco's etc. of the world be trusted with an Audi?  Do most
dealers just send them out once it's removed from the car, or do they work on
them themselves?

I guess the good news about the clunking I occasionally hear when shifting
into reverse is that at least I'll get more for my money when I replace my
rear main oil seal!  

I wasn't too happy about the $700-$900 estimates I received for just sticking
in a new seal so I'll have it replaced at the same time the transmission is
worked on.  For some reason I don't resent it as much when I'm investing money
on a transmission instead.

Any btdt's?
