Quattro more expensive than FWD?

Are quattro equipped cars likely to fail in the quattro system?
I know that the possible expenses are high, but are the quattro with
torsen-differential something that will break down sooner or later,
before the rest of the car? I've heard scenarios about parts at a cost
of $6000 and so on, are this true?
