If the belts just old and dried out, it will show those signs of age. But
thats not the only cause of failure. On the V 6's for instance, the water
pumps have been seizing up as well as the edge of the pulley having a rough
edge and shreding the belt. Also the idlers on all they engines have been
known to seize up . We had one serpentine belt shred and the debris got under
the t/belt and displaced it. Game over. i f the belt gets any slack in it and
you hang a big downshift causing drastic rpm change, the belt can jump.
