Sorry - I think I can top that ...
Roger Galvin and I 'share' the driving to Club meetings. We figure
the beer that two normally drink is enough to anestetise whoever isn't
driving that night.
For months, he's been rabbiting on about the superiority of the MB to
the WR. And he's been trying to buy an MB.
His dream came true today. Tony Hill has decided to sell his sub-50k
Pearlescent White, and Roger has paid GBP12k for it. It was on the
stand at Coy's and - even though he hasn't yet paid for it - Tony let
him take it home. Well, we all know where he lives ...
So - late this evening, Roger and I left Silverstone along the A43 and
the A5 to Lutterworth. Lovely, fast, sweeping 'A' roads with almost
no traffic. It's dark, so I led the way with the light mods he hasn't
yet had done. For the first time (but see later) he could keep up with
me - he's tried before in a 200TQ, a V8, a WR, and a 2.3E Coupe Quattro.
This time, he stayed in the mirrors all the way. Great fun.
Until, that is, the dual carriageway before the DIRFT turnoff, when he
pulled out and blew me away. Checking his car on arrival at his house,
both plugs and exhaust pipe indicate he's been running on around the
right mixture - mine is as lean as ever. So our problems are not
generic to the MB engine, but perhaps generic to somewhat worn examples.
Suspect number one is the metering head.
Anyway - a tremendous 'quattro experience'.
