Sounds like total BS. I had a timing belt fail on a 4k (1.8 luckily) and
the failure mode was teeth striping out at idle. The outside of the belt
looked perfect. If I bent the belt over backwards I could see cracks on
the inside at each tooth, but I had to remove the belt to see that. Your
experience just solidifies the general list opinion that water pumps,
idlers and timing belts should be changed at 50k miles or 5 years
whichever comes first and that it applies to V-6's also.
