I've always heard that you should run the car and pull the fuel pump fuse (or
releay) and let the car die. This will depresurize the fuel system. But,
whenever you're disconnecting fuel lines, wrap a rag around the connections as
you loosen them anyway so you don't get sprayed. Also, have the new filter
ready and re-connect it quickly or you will soon have quite a puddle of fuel
around and probably on you. The crush washers should be included with the new
filter so be sure to use them and make all connections quite tight. You don't
want these lines to leak anywhere. Depending on the age of your car, it might
be wise to have a few sections of fuel hose laying around in case you encounter
any dry/cracked lines. Trust me when I say that this is not something you want
to do all the time, unless you like smelling like gasoline for the rest of the
day.
