More questions to 4kQ owners
A big thank you to all of the people who responded to my questions
last week regarding my new project 84 4kq- Bill, Phil, Todd, Stott,
Dan, Steve, dave, Huw. Of course a weekend full of car-type
activities raises more questions:
1) Can anyone confirm/deny that the part numbers shown in Huw's web
page (http://www.thebook.com/human-speakers/audi-gearshift.htm) for
the bushings etc. also apply to an '84 4kq? I'd like to get the parts
ordered soon-driving the thing is an exercise in futility. Huw- your
website is a blessing we keepers of the early-eighties flame! Kudos!
2)I replaced rubber bits in the diff lock circuit. I'm still not
getting any actuation of either center or rear solenoids. Do the
linkages freeze up over time? I'm very leery of the cable that
connects the center solenoid to the differential. Any BTDT's? My
test setup is an old refrigerator compressor that is verified to
pulling 30" Hg, connected to the white vac supply line under the hood.
I am hearing hissing air (small amt) around the lock switch,
especially when closed. Are these switches usually pretty sturdy, or
are they a failure point?
3) Thanks to those who recommended getting an oversized thread drain
plug to repair my stripped pan. It seems to be working- no more Exxon
Valdez. I got the 1x oversize- the 2x oversize was not available at
my shop.
4)Does the center diff share fill plugs with the transmission? I
located a drain plug on both the diff and the trans, but only one fill
plug on the trans. And the capacity- is it the standard 'fill it
till it drips' method, or is it more? I plan on using Redline MTL in
the transmission, any recommendations for the diffs?
I must say, I am having a blast working on this car, and my wife is
beginning to regret the purchase. "Yes but honey, now you can have
the turbo!"
