Huw is correct ... the quattro shift linkage is completely different than
the FWD ... hey, who hooked up that prop shaft where the shift linkage is
supposed to attach? :-)
The selector rod comes out of the tranny near the front drive flange on the
driver's side of the tranny. There are 3 problems that can develop in the
linkage: 1) the bushings on the locating rod can disintegrate, 2) the
plastic socket at the end of the linkage near the tranny can disintegrate,
and 3) the ball that plugs into aforementioned socket can get loose on the
shift lever. Actually, I just remembered a fourth failure mode, which
requires no parts replacement ... the bolt that attaches the gearshift lever
to the tranny's selector rod can loosen and cause sloppy shifting and
inability to select all gears. Whenever you reconnect the linkage to the
tranny selector rod be sure to clean everything as best you can and use
Locktite on the threads.
I do not have the fiche for a 4kq [yet], but I have seen the linkages on the
4kq and the QTC and they are identical ... and it certainly appears that the
linkage on the 5kq may be shaped a bit differently, but it probably uses the
same parts. Here are the numbers that I got:
431 711 429 B Connecting Rod [which I referred to as a "locating rod"
above - mode #1]
431 711 221 Ball Socket [failure mode #2]
857 711 181 B Gearshift Lever [attaches to tranny shift rod - failure mode
#3]
HTH!
