The Commonwealth Ave. incident, according to the investigation,
was caused by the the idiot gently putting the nozzle down while
it was pumping. Rational for this must have been to cost
the station owner money.
You should try different stations, just about all the
self service stations I've patronized in the last few
weeks have had the auto-pump feature on the nozzle.
Merit off the Pike in Alston, Texaco near Cleveland
Circle, plus the 3 stations in Maine, New Hampshire
and Cape Cod that I stopped at in the last month.
I am very glad the feature is back, I get to clean the
windshield while it pumps.
As for "accidents", the only one I've personally
witnessed years ago, auto-pump feature wouldn't
have made a difference. A hose got ripped by someone
driving off with it in the tank, it kept pumping,
covering a car in gasoline. We almost gave the
elderly driver of the gas covered car a heart
attack by gestering and screaming at him NOT to
turn on the engine. I put a good dent in his fender
when I kicked it trying to get his attention when
he was inserting the key in the ignition.
