A4 rear lic. bracket

My '98 A4's rear license bracket is ugly.  It's a black plastic thing that
sticks out from underneath the license plate, because Audi make the d*mn
thing too big.  I suppose they expected the dealer to put on one of those
sheet metal jobs with the dealer's name on it, around the license plate;
but my dealer didn't and so the black plastic thing hangs down below the
plate and looks like hell against the pearl paint.

Yep, same car, same colour, same problem. I wound up trimming 10-15 mm off the
lower edge of that black plastic thing. Now it does not extend beyond the lic
plate. 
The lic plate itself is covered with a clear (no, not smoked!!!) lexan cover.
I know, it's cheesy but in PA we have the annual registration stickers attached
to the left bottom corner of the rear lic plate. Thieves love to cut them out
with tin snips. In Philly you can see a lot of butchered lic plates.
