Rear Window Defroster Connection
If I understand the problem correctly. Conductive element grid for rear
window defroster has a break. I assume this was verified by a continuity
check. It can be fixed by soldering a "bridge" across the open, but this
is difficult. (How will solder stick to the glass?)
I know of two sources for easy repair user-friendly repair kits. The
repair material is a conductive resin. The method is to "paint" this
liquid conductor across the open to complete the circuit. The repair
material hardens to make a permanent connection. It seems that the repair
kits contain the conductive resin (epoxy I assume), an applicator, a
template, and instructions. It looks like the template is 2 pieces of
masking tape. The applicator looks like a small brush.
GM makes a kit. It retails for ~$15. It is called a "Rear Window Defogger
Repair Kit". Part Number 12345345. Group Number 8.800.
Loctite also makes one. Part Number 15067. They call it "QUICK GRID Rear
Window Defogger Repair Kit".
Both kits include repair resin compound, an applicator brush, directions,
and a template to attach to the window as a guide for applying the repair
compound. The kits have a shelf life, so buy them when you are ready to do
the repair. I got this from a recent article in "The Corvette Restorer
Magazine". The author, Lewis G. Russell, quoting a plant engineer, stated
that the factory uses this method for repairs. He also stated that he
personally had had success with this method. HTH
