The V8 uses a form of motronic, which in turn uses a mass air flow sensor to
measure air mass and determine proper fuel air mixture. Others (Ned Ritchie
of IA?) have reported that placing a cone-type filter in place of the factory
air box (this wasn't on the V8; a '91 200q I believe) causes turbulence and
can confuse the mass air flow sensor. The screen in the '91 200q is placed
just after the air box and before the mass air flow sensor; I'm not sure where
it is on the V8. Check the fiche (if you have it) and get the part
description, as that may help figure out it's actual function.
