Should We Choose Cars Based on Image or What Does Your QuattroSay About You?
I've been following the Porsche Guys thread with some bemusement.
Many of us are attracted to marques (sometimes specific models within
a marque) whose stereotypical image doesn't coincide with our
self-image. I, for example, am a great admirer of most Porsches and
hope to have another one or three some day. My wish list also includes
such diverse image-projectors as BMW (M3, 540i), Corvette (C5)
Chevy/GMC Suburbans and large diesel 4x4 pickups from Ford and
Dodge. There's almost certainly an A4q (or S4) somewhere in my
future and possibly an older S4 or S6. Early glimpses of the
forthcoming TT and TTS are extremely promising. Did I mention the Z28
that currently shares garage space with the 4KSQ? Both are driven and
enjoyed for entirely different reasons. My psychiatrist assures me that
multiple personality disorders are treatable and that many people go on
to lead normal, productive lives . . .
It's tempting to say screw the stereotypes, though maybe it's not that
simple. Like most half-truths, they have tenuous basis in fact. Even if
they didn't, some folks are going to draw conclusions based on what
you drive. Not, I hope, genuine enthusiasts such as those who inhabit
this list. We, of all people, should understand the pleasantly irrational
(if not mildly insane) vicissitudes that afflict our choice of vehicles and
make generous allowances for those whose attractions inexplicably
differ from our own.
