87 4kq needs new suspension
Mark Chang: I am the happy owner of an '86 4kq with the 2B coil over
and the Koni yellows. Myself and a buddy changed over both of our
4kq's about six months back. When I saw him grind off the spring
supports off the strut tube, and being already concerned with what
the 325 lb/in front springs were going to do to the ride, I thought
"this ain't for me!!!" I had actually called 2B and asked what
their return policy was. Fortunately, I decided to wait until my
friends car was done. As one of the Bennett brothers assured me, this
suspension set up is the way to go. I promptly installed my kit. The
ride is noticably stiffer, but still very nice, though more attention
is required for speed bumps and the like. A small price to pay, since
the wallowing, and the roll has been eliminated. The adjustable
height suspension lets the speed shop accurately adjust the weight to
each wheel, as well as get your CG as low as possible. I have driven
Boge, Bilstein, and Koni - and I'm sold on the Koni's. They might be
a bit softer, but seem to be the best overall ride. If the springs
are too stiff, they are easily and cheaply swapped for softer ones.
If this becomes your race car, it is easy and cheap to put in stiffer
ones. The set up we have is 325 lb/in F, 250 lb/in R. Absolutely
transformed the car. I would not recommend anything else.
Hope this helps your decision.
