My 80 5k did this once, and my 83 5kt tried to - just die in heavy
rain.  I always figured it was just electrical connections (could be one
of so many) losing their integrity.  Especially since washing the engine
could have the same effect.  Theory untested.  Theoretical solution -
disconnect all wiring junctions, clean, add silicon dielectric, cross
fingers.  Check for water/corrosion at the ecu as well.
At least you didn't do what I thunk you did when I read the subject!
