Isn't VW in some sort of joint venture with Ford?

Anyway - one of the VW "people carriers" turned up at BR Motorsport a
few months back.  It had a VR6 engine, and its owner wanted something
done to improve its performance.  Fine - I'm not sure what they did.

But I went over the thing (about 350 miles on the clock) with one of the
mechanics.  Fully configured with all its seats in place, it has less
luggage space than an ur-quattro.  What's the point in being able to
carry seven people if they have to leave their Walkmen at home?
