Sorry to hear paint jobs are soo expensive in Boulder.  Before he
retired, an old fella here in NY (with 35 years autobody experience) was
willing to paint my 100 for $600.  His material cost (Dupont cleaning
and paint products) was a whopping $250.  Admittedly it was more a hobby
with him, and I probably would have waited 2-3 weeks for the car, but
really, your estimates are way out of line for this part of the country. 
Next time you need a paint job, go east young man.
