Interesting...

The wife's 89 100 Avant had a similar knock as did my old
89 100 as well.

Backing out of the driveway, swing left or right in our case
and you would here a definite knock/clunk in the front end.

Believe it was Strut Bearings.  I've been told numerous times by
listers and Audi Mechanics if you replace struts, do the bearings
as well.

My wife's car had new Strut Bearings, Lower Control Arms, sway bar
bushings.  So I can't tell for sure which part fixed it....
