I agree...but if they certify the S3 for the US, they might try the A3 as well.

Could it possibly be drivetrain testing for the 2000/2001 Power Beetle?
Rumored to use the A3 platform, a 200hp VR6 (or possibly the 1.8T which is 
already slated to be an optional mill in the current Beetle), and synchro awd 
system.  One early spy report even showed an electric "targa" type top, but 
mentioned a convertible version was more likely.   

I'm not a big fan of the neoBeetle, but this I'd consider!  
On the other hand, I'm not holding my breath.
