The other part of the equation for Audis pre-1990 or so is the
ridiculously low book value due to the 60 minutes brouhaha.  It
certainly let a lot of us into Audi ownership cheap, but it makes the
accident repair equation a little weird.  I have "totalled" my Coupe
twice... when I drowned the engine the car was totalled before the
adjuster got past "cleaning " the interior.  My recent accident totalled
the car before the Audi body shop guy was done entering bumper trim
pieces.

The reason they wind up for sale is probably that the insurance
settlements won't cover the repairs due to low book value.
