I saw an interesting chart showing the world's reserves of oil (as known
at the time...). The US and Saudi Arabia both had roughly equal amounts
under the ground, but SA's oil was all in a few huge deposits, whereaas
the US's was spread throughout hundreds of smaller locations. So the US
domestic oil costs more, basically, to find and extract. The middle
east oil is cheap and easy to obtain. So long as they feel the "need"
to keep selling it to us...
