The early style pocket that screws on from the back is incompatible with
a speaker board screwed on from the outside.  AFAIK, however, the later
style full length pocket which screws on from the outside (well, inside
the door but screws go in after the panel is on) would go over a board
like that just fine, so long as they leave 1" or so clear at the
bottom.  Only reason I haven't btdt is the difficulty in finding door
pockets that haven't had all their screw holes destroyed.  (For a coupe
in my case - brown, in case anyone is listening...)
