4kq Turbo question

Now that I have an 87 4kq, I can now think about what upgrades I'd like to
do. I haven't been following any threads about turbo conversions lately,
but would like to explore the poss. First, does a turbo conversion in a 4kq
require the AC to be completely removed to facilitate the mounting of the
intercooler? Is there no other place to mount it so as to retain AC?  2nd,
which motor is prefered? I am not into the high-tech turbo motors in later
year cars. TIA!
