4K turbo conversion

First, does a turbo conversion in a 4kq require the AC to be completely
removed to facilitate the mounting of the intercooler?
Is there no other place to mount it so as to retain AC?

I do not believe that you can keep the stock AC, my car is a pro-rally car,
so all of that
has been removed. It's not the intercooler which gets in the way of the AC
compressor, it the actual turbo
and the piping

You may find that you can install the intercooler in front of the rad. - I
have it placed in front of the inlet manifold
just next to the right headlight (involves building an extended nose to make
it fit).

I have just completed the 4kq Turbo conversion and I would say that this is
not
something for the faint hearted. What I thought would take a couple of
months to
achieve, has taken close to 6. I still have some electrical connections to
try and
figure out, but the engine does run. There are some "gottchas" :

1 - I used an engine from a 5000T (86 I think), you have to remove the oil
pan and substitute the
4000 oil pan, as the 5000T is only about 1/4" from the radiator, with engine
movement the
2 touch. I haven't made the change yet, as I will probably move the radiator
sideways slightly.

2 - you need the bent right tie-rod arm - the UrQ arm will not fit, as the
taper on the tie-rod is
different.

3 - you have to finds someone with lots of Audi turbo hosing. The 4K engine
compartment is
narrower than the 5K and as a result I could not make the original turbo
hoses fit properly.
The biggest problem being the placement of the intercooler and it associated
hoses.

4 - Brake vacuum - I thin k I may have a problem with this. The turbo engine
does not create a lot
of vacuum, ad a result I may find that the brake booster will not have
sufficient vacuum.

5 - wiring - what a night mare !!!!!!!!!!!
